I've changed the first -A to -a. I agree this was probably a typo.

Hmm. On rerunning the build, the README.Debian now appears. That seems
to have been the problem. Any idea why this was causing it to fail?

He's using package.examples files, so calling dh_installexamples
without arguments works.

Judging from the examples in the debhelper package, it is recommended
practice to use -a and -i flags systematically everywhere, so I have
made those changes.
