adding a bit more: even kernel 2.4.18 doesn't like
SCSI adapter. It booted but failed to recognize
additional partition. In my system, / (root) is in
/dev/sda1 and /home is in /dev/sdb1 then kernel 2.4.18
recognizes SCSI adapter but fails to recognize /dev/sdb1
and I need to press Ctrl+D at some stage and the system
has only / but no /home at all.

And as Helge wrote, kernel 2.4.25 failes to boot at recognizing
SCSI adapter (sym53c8xx in my case).

I suspect at least Alpha needs 2.2.x kernel at present.
