I don't think that anything much has been demonstrated, other than (as
you observed) the small-but-noticeable effect of optimising one
particular CPU-intensive application.  Comparing the difference between
kernels running bzip2 won't tell you much, as most of the time is spent
in user space, not kernel space, as your own tests show.
