Cleaning up the GIMP mess

GIMP seems to be quite a mess. Looking at the sources file, I see
that there are two versions of GIMP 1.2 in the archive (1.2.3 and the
current stable version, 1.2.5), and they partly build the same binary
packages. Also, why is gimp1.2-nonfree built from a source package in
main?

  Package: gimp
  Binary: gimp, libgimp1.2, libgimp1.2-dev, gimp-perl, gimp1.2-perl, gimp1.2
  Version: 1.2.5-2

  Package: gimp1.2
  Binary: gimp1.2, libgimp1.2, libgimp1.2-dev, gimp1.2-nonfree, gimp1.2-perl
  Version: 1.2.3-2.4

The GIMP related packages also have about 3 open Release Critical bugs
(see http://bugs.debian.org/che@debian.org). The maintainer hasn't
been particularly active in recent years.

Any volunteers to clean up that mess?
