At my workplace (a US university) they went out of their way to make
sure that email wasn't on backup tapes, and is automaticly expunged
after several months.  Apparently a reaction to some laws about what
can be suppeanaed, what they don't have they can't answer questions
about.  (Users can copy the email, but then it's in their personal
file space not the universities email storage.)
