But, OTOH, I have been told that they charge a per-machine license fee
that is significantly higher than the license fee for the compareable
Redmondware.

If you have more than a handful machines, you could easily afford a
full-time hacker to care for your Debian boxes from the money you
would have to throw to SuSE instead.
