Not sure about sylpheed, but my evolution directory is even bigger. It's all cached IMAP mail.
Hmmm, on this Mac, I've got 600MB of cached offline mail in nearly 23,000 files (Apple's Mail.app, not evolution). You'd think alt.binaries.pictures.* lived in my mailbox...
