You might be interested in the runit and runit-run packages.  It's a
different init system already available in Debian (sid/sarge), although
it doesn't integrate well with the init script system, simply because it
doesn't use init scripts.

The split of the sysvinit package seems to make better integration more
easy, also the update-rc.d, invoke-rc.d, and policy-rc.d interfaces, I
appreciate this.  I'm still developing the packages as time permits.
