I think it's worth noting that these issues *are* being taken care of
by Tollef Fog Heen and the rest of the d-i team. The design of the new
installer is more modular, which will hopefully allow improvements in
the long run. I'm definitely not qualified to talk about it in detail,
but from all accounts this will be a great improvement over the
boot-floppies install used in woody. While all the Debian Developers
are pretty well aware of this issue, I don't think our users are quite
so aware, so we get complaints like this even though help has been
requested over and over for work on the installer.

For the users monitoring this list and feel similar to the parent of
this thread, go have a look at the debian-installer project's work.
Tollef just posted a status update, and it seems like the installer is
making real progress. If you're interested in helping, or simply
following how the installer is progressing, subscribe to debian-boot
before making more doomsday predictions related to the installer.

And for the rest of these issues, I think we as developers/maintainers
need to make our users aware that there are standard ways we deal with
these issues. Big fonts in the default gnome install isn't a sign of
armageddon, but rather a cause to file a bug report. Bug reports are
how we fix issues in Debian, and issues do in fact get fixed. The rest
of us on the list know this, but somehow it escapes a lot of users.
Many users don't even know the BTS exists (I know this from personal
experience on #debian), and making them familiar with it is a part of
the transition from being a Linux user to being a Debian user.
