Just following the W3C recommandations (ending the list with a generic font) 
in the stylesheet won't change the problem.
The way to choose the font to use for display is to pick the first existing 
one. If this font is one that X can't AA while rendering (e.g. Helvetica), it 
won't be AAed, and the webmaster is not to blame for that.

For instance, if the list is "Verdana Helvetica sans-serif" and you have 
Helvetica, Helvetica will be used...
