Um, he's still the maintainer of the package.  Even the package in stable.
Presumably you wouldn't want him to undo your security patch if he ever has
to make a bugfix upload to stable.  Also, he will have to deal with the
bugreports about your NMU.

This is silly.  A NMU is done precisely because a maintainer is
inactive at the moment, and a patch has to be filed to let the
maintainer know what happened.
