Why do you think 25% of the research money was spent on a few extra
instructions. Surely most of it went on executing 386 instructions extremely
fast. Only in very specialist circumstances do these extra instructions need
to be brought in.
Isn't this the crux of the _apparent_ apathy towards your idea. Noone is sure
how much these specific extra instructions matter in the majority of what
happens. So that its more of a "marketers" speak rather than technical speak
that encourages a lot of people to go to the apparent benefits a compile
optimised for your 686 achitecture.
BUT ... I too would be interested in some proper tests of the differences ..
(probably for the same irrational reason that I site above).
