I have got at least a few things to work by not starting
gnome-session, and starting gnome-panel and sawfish explicitly, but
something's definitely screwed. Nautilus doesn't start up cleanly
(and in its usual user-friendly way, therefore starts up repeatedly
and crashes, popping up focus-grabbing dialogs as it does so,
therefore making it difficult to do anything).
(GNOME's nice when it works, but it fails ungracefully, and it doesn't
seem to be easy to investigate what's going wrong.)
