Bug#169328: general: some graphics program is leaving .xvpics turds all over the place

Package: general
Version: N/A; reported 2002-11-16
Severity: important

Dear Sirs:
Everywhere is getting littered with ".xvpics" temporary directories
due some graphics program not using /var/tmp or /tmp like it should.

Not only have I accidentally copied these to my website, even they
have littered debian:

/usr/share/doc/lg/issue43/gm/images/.xvpics
/usr/share/doc/lg/issue43/gm/images/.xvpics/gc-ad.gif ...

try "locate .xvpics" and see for yourself if you don't have some too!

I bet it's gimp:
$ which gimp-1.2|xargs strings|grep xvpi
.xvpics
.xvpics
This procedure saves a thumbnail in the .xvpics format for the given image. The thumbnail is saved so that it belongs to the file with the given filename. This means you have to save the image under this name first, otherwise this procedure will fail. This procedure may become useful if you want to explicitely save a thumbnail with a file.

but I'm not sure.

Anyway, find out what program does it, and configure it to not leave
these little droppings all over the current directory. Just because I
like browsing uh, certain photos, doesn't mean I want to have them get
into my Final Paper because some program isn't sanitary. I bet it's a
tmp file policy violation too.
