Amen. We've /got/ to realise that serving the users is in the end the
only goal.

Of course, the good people involved in Debian share the conviction that
users are much better served with software that's free to use, modify
and distribute -- that's why we put effort into writing such software
and making it available.

But let's not forget that even the Holy GNU General Public License (and
the DFSG) is just a means to an end, which is to provide the user with
good software; software that constitutes a net contribution to the whole
body of knowledge because it will always be available to be used and
improved by others (and because even the fruits of that improvement will
be).

I mean, let's not forget that it all started out because people wanted
other people to have access to good software they could use, improve and
share, and found existing software licensing too restrictive. Not to be
the most influential source of software or to take over the world,
despite what Linus says! ;-)

Cheers,

Emile.
