Some amateur usability testing is of course worth doing - it will provide
some worthwhile insights.  But real, professional usability testing takes a
lot of time, money, and resources.  I doubt that Debian can afford it.

However, all is not lost.  Gnome UI Guidelines were, if I recall correctly,
developed with a lot of help from Sun.  So we can look at the results of
that work, and adapt it as needed.  Same for the KDE usability guidelines.
And there are other resources out there to look at for ideas on UI best
practices.

And in the end, we should ask Debian developers and regular users to take a
look at the Debian Desktop default UI choices, from a newbie perspective,
and request feedback and improvements.  Just part of the Debian debugging
process :-)
