Eh? I thought the whole idea of versioning was that it /didn't/ force
a full recompile of all the apps.

If it does, then you do a so-name change, and end up with libpng3v
or similar. Note that we've released libpng3 with the current soname and ABI,
we don't get to randomly break that at whim.
