For all that are interested: I've posted a HOWTO as a followup to the
bugreport against initrd-tools [1]. There are two little edges in the
solution, but they are not a problem and the solution works well. If
someone knows how to fix these, please tell me and I can include it.

Before you use the solution you have to change /dev/hda5 to your
respective root device.
