Incidentally, the best fix for the problem you cite is probably the
build-environment-info-in-.debs proposal.  I don't have a cite for you
but it came up in -devel or -policy within the past month.  After all,
relying on a library to have internal versioning information doesn't do
much good if the upstream doesn't put any in it.
