One clarifying example would be, after comparing 0.1 and 0.01, to
compare 0.10 and 0.01 (shows the easy way to deal with version numbers
that really are on a continuum -- and that you can take "decimal"
versions and convert them to major/minor style trivially (just
right-pad with zeros, and never make the padded field shorter, and
you're fine), but the reverse is not true, so the dpkg way is the
correct one.)  But yeah, looks like you got it.
