You do not need this step.
Svante> Install lm-sensors
Svante> Install and unpack lm-sensors-source
Svante> cd /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18
Svante> cp /boot/config-2.4.18-686 ./.config

Svante> cd /usr/src/modules/lm-sensors
Svante> fakeroot ./debian/rules KSRC=/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.18-686 KVERS=2.4.18-686 KDREV=2.4.18-4 kdist_image
make-kpkg configure modules_image
Svante> With this setup also alsa-modules builds OK.
So:
1) Install kernel-image-2.4.18-686
2) Install and unpack kernel-source-2.4.18
3) Install and unpack lm-sensors-source
4) cd /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18, cp /boot/config-2.4.18-686 ./.config
5) make-kpkg --rotcmd fakeroot configure modules_image
You do not need to waste time building the kernel image.
