Re: interesting times installing 2.4.17 in Woody...

Well, my first Debian install (onto a G450) went badly wrong, and took
me down a path into configuration hell. I don't fully understand what
went wrong, but I did not have a functional X server after the install.

Once in configuration hell, many/most of the problems I had were not
Debian specific, but really botches
in XFree86 and/or XFree86 device drivers. As I have ways of twisting
XFree86 developer's arms, I intend to follow up further. I figure if I have
(major) trouble, gawd forbid this happen to some Linux newbie.

For example, there exists code in the TinyX server that automagically
detects what flavor mouse you have, which, if moved into the
main XFree86 server would prevent many installation configuration
problems in the mouse area, and I'll twist Keith Packard's arm to do it
(though a volunteer to do it would also be welcome and it could happen faster that way; I'm unwilling to twist hard until Keith's finished with his Xft
rewrite).
