I propose that we remove this parens from the "1. Initial contact" page
(http://www.debian.org/devel/join/nm-step1 )

    * enough experience in order to become an official Debian Developer
(the preferred way is to have a package sponsored by a Debian developer;
of course, involvement in other free software projects counts as well).

It does not at all say that you have to package something, but
psychologically it suggest to the prodigy that "Real Contributors are
Package Maintainers", which at the moment seems to me to be false.
