The difference between your experience and mine was that you upgraded
apt/dpkg before you did the dist-upgrade. (at least that is my best guess)
Early on in this thread I was provided with this fix. I have echoed it at
least twice. (and now three times ;-)
I've got a day job this week, so I will not be able to test this until
this weekend, but I _will_ report my experience with the "correct"
proceedure, even if nobody cares...

This is a good reply if you give adequate details of "what I did". Blunt
replies like that seem to imply that the person who claims failure is
lying, which I must consider a rare occasion in fact... Confusion can be
reduced if we all remember that we are all working toward the same goal.
The devil is in the details...
