the /opt thing makes more sense to me.  initscripts in
/etc/opt/init.d, the binary cruft in /opt/package, install symlinks
(or wrapper scripts) in /opt/bin.

simplifies the packaging issues significantly.  proprietary software
belongs in /opt.  Free Sofware will be assimil^Wpackaged by debian
correctly so lsb is completly irrelevant to Free Software.
