I have no specialised requirements (except that it pisses me off when lilo
won't boot my machine). I use grub because it's better (IMNSHO).

Yes, the term 'better' is subjective, but the specialised requirements
argument still falls down.

I think it's unreasonable that lilo is base "just because", yet grub is
extra because more people use and know lilo.

I don't see any reason why grub can't be optional instead of extra, and I
don't see any reason why grub can't be base and lilo optional.
