This is simply not true. You can install lilo in the head of an extended
partition for example, and GRUB in the MBR. GRUB can chainload lilo.
You can have GRUB and lilo on different MBRs of different hard disks.
GRUB is scriptable, you can use it for developing a binary distribution.
You can also use it to produce bootable disk images for virtual machines
like plex86.
