I don't expect to see the same attendance at Ottawa as at Bordeaux.

I believe that Western Europe has a higher density of geeks who can afford
such things than Canada and northern USA. Also the conference in Bordeaux is
extremely cheap (no conference fees, very cheap accomodation, free breakfast,
very cheap lunch at the Uni cafe and cheap dinner in town).

OLS is not expensive by professional conference standards, but it is very
much a professionally run and organized event with the people involved making
a profit. There is nothing wrong with this, but it does make everything more
expensive. Hotels instead of student hostels. Restaurant lunch instead of
Uni cafe. No free breakfast. Ottawa restaurants are more expensive than
Bordeaux restaurants.

The services that OLS provides are very good. There are some excellent
speakers who are less likely to attend a conference in Bordeaux. There is
full 802.11b networking, and terminals for people who lack laptops. The
conference rooms are well fitted out and it's in the middle of the city.

OLS is good. But I think that a large portion of the people who attended
Bordeaux will not be willing/able to spend the money required for travel,
conference registration, accomodation, and food.
