Hello,
Afaics mkinitrd generates a initial ramdisd which uses /bin/ash instead
of /bin/sh as shell (for some shell-skript) to keep it small. Once you
have sucessfully installed the kernelimage and (automatically[1])
generated a initrd customized to your kernel and hardware you could
purge ash until you install the next bernel, because the necessary
copy of /bin/ash sits savely in /boot/initrd-<kernelversion>
