I'm advocating use of true color and big icons.
Such icons are usable in KDE and GNOME.
For old systems, the menu back end should do that conversion automatically.
That way every menu system uses the best icons it can utilize. You don't need
two directory trees, simply append "-32x32" to the filename before the
extension or ("-menu" if you'd like).
I think the requirement on icon sizes and colors in menu should be weakened,
and this automatic conversion thingie should be implemented. The converter
can trivially compare dates of generated images and original images to avoid
duplicate processing.
