It needs to be compiled with _FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 for i386 at least
(probably others). There's even a note to that effect in the README; I
don't know why it wasn't done. Using the appropriate autoconf routines
would be nice.

That may be a protocol limitation. Try sftp.
largefile support was never advertised (AFAIK) as a release goal for
woody, and it's probably too late to try now. If the consensus
disagrees, people had better start testing & filing bugs.
