Well, as far as I understand it, being an advocate means that you
think I'm fit to be a developer, so I could enter the new maintainer
process, and from there become a Debian developer myself.

Sponsoring a package, on the other hand, I think means that you
believe I have the potential to be a developer, but you take on a sort
of mentoring role by perhaps looking at my changes to the sponsored
package before uploading it, etc.  I think this is viewed as a good
way to determine whether or not you want to actually advocate someone
for becoming a developer.

But, I might have gotten this wrong, and if I have, I'm sure I'll be
corrected promptly, as this is -devel :)
