Do you have a "search" or "domain" line in /etc/resolv.conf?

How does your /etc/hosts look like?

No, this should not happen.

You could try to install a caching nameserver (standard bind configuration
on debian), send it the SIGWINCH signal (see man named) and watch
/var/log/daemon.log for the queries.
