Well the pdmenu thing was my fault (sort of) for relying on an
undocumented interface. I think you'll find it is worked around already,
and I hope to have a real fix soon.
On the console (novel idea to try things there ;-), with the debconf slang
frontend and with whiptail, the problem I am seeing is that they are not
drawing their borders right. It seems that the slang calls to draw a box
out of high ascii characters are inexplicably failing or something. I'm
not able to reproduce the other problems people have reported though.
