Regarding the defaults, it shouldn't be complicated. debconf can do a 
beautiful job. It provides a very appropriate way to show a 
philosophical explanation the first xpdf is installed, set the 
defaults based on the user's desires and there is no need to ask 
again. Just dpkg-reconfigure if you change your mind :)
