Querying the set of installed packages

Hi...

I was just wondering what would be considered the most robust and
efficient way to query the set of installed packages on a system.

I noticed that debsums does so by parsing /var/lib/dpkg/status; it
also seemed possible by listening to "dpkg -l". Since I'm working
in Python, dpkg-python sprang to mind, but after a brief examination
it didn't appear to be a very accessible body of code.

Suggestions?
