for unstable and modify apt so that it would query the status of
unstable and warn you before downloading?
Something like 

If unstable has severity grave then it would pretty much trash your
machine to he point of no return

If unstable has severity important it would be usable but key services
are broken.

...yada yada

you get the idea, this would be a nice way to encourage the use of
unstable and keep to many people from being bitten by already known
problems.

apt-get would be able to query the BTS at runtime and ask the user if
they really want to update their packages if the severity is above
normal . or something.
