Yup, that was it. But still the new system is strange. Right now only some
users can login via gdm and the KDE system starting has the umlauts
incorrect. Sure I set it to German but instaed of an umlaut it prints some
fancy sequence.

On the other hand gdm is (more or less correctly) localized while gdm on my
system refuses to show anything but english texts.
