problems with gdm/kdm

I just installed a machine with potato plus kde 2.0.1. It works nicely
except that kdm comes up with a 640x400 screen. I purged kdm and installed
gdm because I wanted to use it anyway but still 640x400. Starting X by hand
gives me a 1152x864 resolution. No I edited XF86Config and removed every
single line referencing 640x400 or any other resolution different than
1152x864 to no avail. Starting gdm gives me a 1152x864 virtual resolution
but only 640x400 on the screen. Any idea what's going on?
