Wichert -- thanks for showing me how to interpret the results of
apt-cache showpkg -- I've included the latest interesting info
following.

Brian -- you were correct in your surmise (I suspected something along
those lines, which is why I included my sources.list with my mail) --
installing php4 from tdyc gave no problems. (I ususally keep tdyc
commented out as I just can't cope with daily 40Mb update/downloads --
once a month is sufficent for me.)
But now I'm stuck across 2 systems -- debian stable; and tdyc, which
upgraded apache for me without my realising it. Anyone know of anything
else it may have upgraded for me to keep in line with kde2, which might
now cause something else to break?

(BTW: I had to change the line in my sources.list to read:
deb http://kde.tdyc.com/debian potato main crypto optional qt1apps )

And now my apt-cache showpkg apache gives:

Package: apache
Versions: 1.3.12-2.0.potato.1(/var/state/apt/lists/kde.tdyc.com_debian_dists_potato_optional_binary-i386_Packages)(/var/lib/dpkg/status),1.3.9-13.1(/var/state/apt/lists/www.uk.debian.org_debian_dists_stable_main_binary-i386_Packages),

and apt-cache showpkg php4 gives:

Package: php4
Versions: 4.0.3pl1-3.potato.1(/var/state/apt/lists/kde.tdyc.com_debian_dists_potato_optional_binary-i386_Packages)(/var/lib/dpkg/status),4.0.3pl1-0potato1(/var/state/apt/lists/www.uk.debian.org_debian_dists_stable_main_binary-i386_Packages)(/var/state/apt/lists/security.debian.org_dists_stable_updates_main_binary-i386_Packages),
....
Provides:
4.0.3pl1-3.potato.1 -
4.0.3pl1-0potato1 -
Reverse Provides:

<SIGH>

But thanks for all the help.
