::SNIP? SNIP!::
I'm running _Helix_ Gnome with gnome-applets 1.2.4-helix1. I have the 1.2.4-helix1 deb and it provides asclock and depends on "asclock-themes (>=2.0.12-1)". When I ran the command that you ran above, I got this:
18:01:55> [root@/var/cache/apt/archives]#dpkg -c gnome-applets_1.2.4-helix1_i386.deb | grep beats
-rw-r--r-- root/root 38 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/Freeamp/beats.xpm
-rw-r--r-- root/root 30 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/Newstone/beats.xpm
-rw-r--r-- root/root 30 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/Orb/beats.xpm
-rw-r--r-- root/root 30 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/Stone/beats.xpm
drwxr-xr-x root/root 0 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/beats/
-rw-r--r-- root/root 225 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/beats/config
-rw-r--r-- root/root 5331 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/beats/clock.xpm

-rw-r--r-- root/root 30 2000-11-15 15:52:14 ./usr/share/asclock/shaped/beats.xpm
Which, I think, is the root of the problem. This was confirmed when I ran the same command on the asclock-themes deb and got this:
18:03:05> [root@/var/cache/apt/archives]#dpkg -c asclock-themes_2.0.12-1_all.deb | grep beats
-rw-r--r-- root/root 38 1999-04-03 19:20:19 ./usr/share/asclock/Freeamp/beats.xpm

...which means that I've got a bug report to fill out...thanx for the help...
