Shared NFS roots are fun, and not that hard. About all it takes is devfs,
a couple of ram disks, and moving gdm's /var/lib into /var/run(RAM disk)
I have two different sets of 10 workstations in a couple of charter
schools. Both run off of a single fast drive in the server after netbooting.
I'll see about writing some of this up for you.

Some of them allready are, with unexpected advantages. Like sharing the
high score files for games. That's, of course, on top of the passwd file
sharing(no NIS, etc) and the fact you can dist-upgrade one, and all the
systems are intantainiously up to date.
