It's his job to get that bug fixed (or at least try to), as he is the
maintainer of the package -- whichever way he (tries to get it or) gets it
done is fine.

It doesn't matter, because the Debian maintainer is responsible for passing
on user bug reports to upstream maintainers when appropriate.
