Truetype fonts, which solution?

What's the recommended supported way of supporting truetype fonts?

There are now three different truetype solutions that I'm aware of in Debian.
Xfree86's 4.0 font server, (does the X server itself natively support truetype
fonts now?) xfs-xtt which is Optional, as well as xfstt which is Extra.

xfs-xtt itself is misclassified, it should be in Extra since it conflicts with
xfs which is Optional.

Now the question is, are either of the specially patched font servers
necessary with XFree86 4.0? Which is better? Is it useful to have both?
