Yes, it looks like a bug in dpkg 1.7.0. I just picked up a sacrifice-lamb
box, updated dpkg (ONLY), and update-alternatives is now hosed.

iczer2# update-alternatives --display editor
No alternatives for editor.
iczer2# cat /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/editor
auto
/usr/bin/editor
editor.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/editor.1.gz

/bin/ae
20
/usr/man/man1/ae.1.gz
/usr/bin/jed
42
/usr/share/man/man1/jed.1.gz
/usr/bin/vim
20
/usr/share/man/man1/vim.1.gz

The same command in a dpkg 1.6.x box results in:
godzillah:~# update-alternatives --display editor
editor - status is auto.
 link currently points to /usr/bin/jed
/usr/bin/jed - priority 42
 slave editor.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/jed.1.gz
/usr/bin/vim - priority 20
 slave editor.1.gz: /usr/man/man1/vim.1.gz
/usr/bin/nano - priority 40
 slave editor.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/nano.1.gz
/usr/bin/xemacs21 - priority -100
Current best' version is /usr/bin/jed.
