It appears that in process of installing perl-5.6-base and removing
perl-5.005-suid that the /usr/bin/perl link was lost. There appeared to
be various other Perl related stuff going on, but I didn't keep a log and
ln -s perl perl-5.005 allowed everything to install. The contents of
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/perl is

> /usr/bin/perl

> /usr/bin/perl-5.005
> 5005
update-alternatives pointed /usr/bin/perl to /etc/alternatives/perl to
/usr/bin/perl-5.6 - I don't understand why it did that, considering
perl-5.6 isn't listed in /var/../alternatives/perl
