Since 2.2.5 is probably not being actively developed anymore, maybe you could
create a squid-2.3 (or squid-2.4) package alongside it, for users whose
environment does not require front-line stability (as was done with the dhcp
packages not too long ago, for example).  Many users (myself included) use
squid on a very small scale (one or a few client systems).

That is, if there are enough feature improvements in 2.3 to justify this.
