If not, I have some ideas.. Documentation/devices.txt suggests that
/dev/root be made to contain a symlink to the actual root device. If
that were done, /proc/mounts would actually be accurate (I think), and
usable as a full replacement for /etc/mtab.
Finding the real root device and making such a link is pretty easy -- about
25 lines of C.
