As the upstream net.tools co maintainer:

IP offers a few features in advantage to ifconfig or route like unnamed
interface aliases, advanced routing options (classes) and a clean (because
of less backward compatible) syntax.

I think a few features will be included in ifconfig and some of the ugy
backward compatible stuff will be removed from ifconfig.

The clean adv antage of ifconfig compared to ip is, that some non-linux user
may be familiar with it, too.
