Works for me too:

I am not running any fontserver though.

I am also a bit surprised to see the error to be EAGAIN. If the font
file was missing (in the place X was looking), I would expect it to
say something like ENOENT.

You probably has done so, but you can check and manipulate fontpaths
with xset.
